DR MARK SETON
Department of Performance Studies, University of Sydney, Macquarie Christian Studies Institute (Lecturer)
Dr
Mark Seton is co-convenor of a biennial Unit of Study at Macquarie
Christian Studies Institute (MCSI), A Christian Perspective
on Popular Culture. Mark has worked variously as an editor,
production manager, director, writer and producer in film
and video production for over 20 years.
He is a founding member of Screenvision (MCSI) and Executive Director of CineDialogue that
has produced both a workshop programme and resource kit to
encourage dialogue about experiences of film and faith.
Faith is not just about words.
We live in a visual culture. Its a sensory and audio
culture. Our expression of our faith experience which, is
a growing and changing thing, can be expressed through these
mediums,” Mark says.
“People are always looking for
new ways of making sense of the world and Christians need
to be a part of that conversation.
KEYNOTE FOR 2008
• Through a screen darkly
Mark Seton outlines the valuable conversations that can be had about questions of identity, truth, humanity, faith and experience through the film adaptations of the science fiction writings of Philip K Dick.
If you've seen Blade Runner, Total Recall, The Minority Report, Paycheck, Through a Glass Darkly or Next, you've seen a film inspired or adapted from Dick.
Science fiction movies often enable us to re-examine current social problems from an estranged distance in order to reconsider what choices we could make to live and act differently. Mark will show clips from each of some of these movies to illustrate Dick's recurring themes of individual and social concern.
• Mark will also be involved in our film discussion panel and running an elective on CineDialogue.
